How to Do the Bodyweight Calf Raise: Form, Sets, Progression
The Bodyweight Calf Raise is a bodyweight exercise that mainly works your calves. Beginners start with 2 sets of 12–15 reps and try one more rep next time.

Form in 3 steps
- Stand with just the balls of your feet on the edge of a step, and lightly hold a wall or railing for balance.
- Breathe in and slowly drop your heels below the step to stretch your calves.
- Breathe out and rise up onto your toes as high as you can. Hold for 1 second, then lower slowly.
Common mistakes
- Fast, bouncy reps: you're using momentum to get up. Pause for 1 second at the top and lower slowly.
- Cutting the range of motion short: your calves miss out. Get a full stretch at the bottom and go all the way up.
- Ankles rolling outward: keep your weight over your big toe and rise straight up.

FAQ
The Bodyweight Calf Raise is too easy.
Try one leg at a time, or hold for 2–3 seconds at the top. Just slowing down the way down makes it a lot harder.
