How to Do the Band Shoulder Press: Form, Sets, Progression
The Band Shoulder Press is a band exercise that mainly works your shoulder. Beginners start with 3 sets of 8–12 reps and try one more rep next time.
Form in 3 steps
- Stand on the middle of the band with both feet. Hold the band in each hand and bring your hands up to shoulder height.
- Brace your core so your lower back doesn't arch, then press your arms up overhead.
- Breathe out as you press. Breathe in and lower slowly, resisting the band's pull.
Common mistakes
- Arching your lower back as you press: this strains your back. Brace your core and pull your ribs down.
- Flaring your elbows wide: this can strain your shoulders. Bring your elbows slightly forward.
- Letting the band pull your arms down: you lose half the benefit. Stay in control on the way down too.

FAQ
What if the band feels too easy or too hard?
If it's too easy, widen your stance or grip the band shorter. If it's too hard, stand on it with just one foot to reduce the tension. The right level makes the last few reps tough without your form breaking down. If your shoulder hurts, stop and see a professional.
